40 years ago, Ornette Coleman, Ingrid Sertso and Karl Berger founded the legendary Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York. To celebrate this historic anniversary, CMS introduced a Spring and Fall 40th Anniversary Intensive Workshop and Retreat in 2013.

Guiding Artists who attended the May and October Workshops include keyboardist John Medeski, saxophonist Oliver Lake, trumpeters Dave Douglas and Steven Bernstein, bansuri flutist Steve Gorn, drummer Harvey Sorgen, pianist Marilyn Crispell, bassist Mark Helias,  reedist Don Byron, pianist/vibist Karl Berger and vocalist/poet Ingrid Sertso, Composer/Pianist Vijay Iyer, Master Percussionist Cyro Baptista, Peter Apfelbaum, Tony Malaby, Jason Hwang, Kirk Knuffke, Tom Rainey, Kenny Wessel, and Thomas Buckner.

CMS 40th Anniversary Retreats are four days of intensive workshops, master classes and presentations that inspire deep listening, personal expression, improvisation and musical exploration. Guiding Artists built on CMS’s legacy by helping participants focus on the common elements of all music, emphasizing keen awareness and cross-cultural communication.

Days at the CMS 40th Anniversary Retreats began with body-work such as Tai Chi or yoga, a gourmet breakfast and a morning master class with Guiding Artists. Lunch is at noon, followed by some free time. Afternoons featured two workshops/master classes with Guiding Artists. After some late afternoon free time and dinner, evenings included workshops, and open jam sessions. Late night consisted of concerts, bonfires, and stargazing at Full Moon’s gorgeous location in the heart of the Catskill Mountains.
